Minneapolis to Vote on Whether to Replace Police Force With Public Safety Department

The city has been the epicentre of worldwide racial justice protests following the killing of George Floyd, a 47-year old black man, by former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin.

The US city of Minneapolis on Tuesday will vote on whether to replace their police department with a Department of Public Safety.

The measure will need support from 51% of Minneapolis residents in order to pass. If passed, the Minneapolis Police Department would be replaced with the Department of Public Safety, which would combine social and medical workers with peace officers to take a comprehensive public health approach to safety.

‘Squid Game’ Crypto Plunges to Zero Overnight After Massive Valuation Spike

A digital currency inspired by the popular Korean TV series “Squid Game” collapsed on Monday, less than two weeks after investors could start buying tokens. The development has since raised suspicions that the entire venture was a scam.

SQUID token’s website and social accounts disappeared after token’s value had spiked more than 310,000% and reached a peak of $2,856 late Sunday before crashing straight to zero, according to CoinMarketCap.

Additionally, investors were having trouble selling their tokens, and the cryptocurrency's white paper describing SQUID was hampered with grammatical errors.

Based on wallet activity, it’s alleged that the creator of the game effectively walked away with approximately $2.5 million of untraceable binance coin (BNB) from investors.

The game’s website, Twitter account and other social media platforms have since been deleted.

USS Connecticut: American Seventh Fleet Reveals What Damaged US Nuclear Sub in South China Sea

In October, the US Navy said that the Connecticut struck an unknown object while operating in international waters in the Indo-Pacific region and that 11 sailors received moderate to minor injuries in the incident. The navy added that the submarine remains in safe and stable condition, and that the vessel's nuclear reactor and propulsion system remain unaffected and fully operational.

A US Seventh Fleet investigation has determined that the Seawolf-class fast-attack submarine USS Connecticut "grounded on an uncharted seamount while operating in international waters in the Indo-Pacific region" in early October.

The Chinese Defence Ministry said last month that Beijing was gravely concerned about the recent incident with a US nuclear submarine, demanding that Washington provide the full details of the accident.

How car shortages are putting the world’s economy at risk

Turmoil in the auto industry, a powerful engine of the global economy, is threatening growth and sending tremors through companies and communities that depend on carmakers for money and jobs.

The shock waves from the semiconductor crisis, which is forcing virtually all carmakers to eliminate shifts or temporarily shut down assembly lines, could be strong enough to push some countries into recession. In Japan, home of Toyota and Nissan, parts shortages caused exports to fall by 46 percent in September compared with a year earlier - a potent demonstration of the car industry’s importance to the economy.

He ran the first N.Y.C. marathon. Next week, he’ll run the 50th.

On Sunday, Sept. 13, 1970, the day before his senior year began at Long Island City High School, Larry Trachtenberg was one of 127 athletes who lined up in Central Park to run the first New York City Marathon. He was one of 55 finishers.

On Sunday, Nov. 7, 2021, Trachtenberg, now 67, will run the marathon again, as one of 33,000 athletes lining up at the base of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge on Staten Island.

He will be the lone runner who ran the inaugural New York City Marathon who is also racing this year’s event, the marathon’s 50th running.

Qatar Won’t Look for Alternatives to US Predator Drones Despite ‘Frustrating’ Sale Delays

Doha has been "extremely frustrated" with the US dragging its feet on the sale of MQ-9B Predator drones to Qatar.

Qatar requested that the US provide it with four armed drones a year ago. The Pentagon was reportedly pushing for the deal to go through, and Doha was prepared to fork out half a billion dollars for that delivery. The State Department, however, has been slow-walking the request without providing any details.

Throughout the years, Qatar has been accused of supporting rebels and extremists on a number of occasions. It backed the Muslim Brotherhood, Hamas, Taliban in Afghanistan and Daesh, that has been outlawed by many regional and international players.

The only question is what interests will prevail in Washington: those of the Pentagon or the State Department. The answer might be revealed during Al Thani's official visit later this year.

New York braces for worker shortage as vaccination deadline nears

City officials are bracing for the possibility that thousands of essential workers - including police officers, firefighters and sanitation employees - could be placed on unpaid leave starting Monday, when the city’s sweeping mandate requiring that almost all municipal workers receive at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine takes effect.

With just over one-third of the workers in the Fire and Sanitation Departments, and one-quarter of the police force, yet to prove that they had been vaccinated as of Thursday morning, city agencies were putting in place an array of contingency plans, including mandating overtime for vaccinated workers and canceling vacations to fill staffing gaps.
