U.K. POLICE CHARGE SUSPECT IN KILLING OF LAWMAKER

Ali Harbi Ali, 25, was accused of murder and preparation of terrorist acts in the killing of David Amess, a lawmaker who was stabbed in a town east of London last week.

It was alleged that Mr. Ali had plotted to kill a member of Parliament for two years and was suspected of being affiliated with the Islamic State.

The attack has rattled the British political establishment and intensified concerns over the security precautions for members of Parliament.

AN EXPERIMENTAL H.I.V. VACCINE FAILS IN AFRICA

Researchers ended a large trial in South Africa after finding that an experimental vaccine offered little protection.

Over two years, 63 of 1,109 participants who received the placebo were infected with H.I.V., compared with 51 of 1,079 participants who received the vaccine — giving the vaccine an efficacy rate of 25 percent, which was very disappointing.

2021-10-19 18:22:31 U.S. will allow to get a second Covid jab of a different vaccine.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is planning to allow Americans to receive a different Covid-19 vaccine as a booster than the one they initially received. The New York Times reports this, citing sources.

"The government would not recommend one shot over another, and it might note that using the same vaccine as a booster when possible is preferable", the report said.

The approach was foreshadowed on Friday, when FDA researchers presented the findings of a federally funded “mix and match” study to an expert committee that advises the Food and Drug Administration. The study found that recipients of Johnson & Johnson’s single-dose shot who received a Moderna booster saw their antibody levels rise 76-fold in 15 days, compared with only a fourfold increase after an extra dose of Johnson & Johnson.

The vaccine gap means that people are going to continue to fall sick and die from Covid across the global south for a long time to come. They will need treatment, and it's great news that an antiviral reportedly blunts severity of Covid infection.
