Not to be missed at every stage of our children’s growth, especially through their tween and teen years. Fun usually helps to nurture it, and it is most needed in the face of difficult behaviours.

Can you guess what it is?

We are thankful for the precious opportunity to partner with St Joseph's Institution Junior for the past two years in the provision of parenting support for the school.

For the past two years, we have had the privilege of engaging both parents and pupils of the Primary 3 cohort through a time of fun interaction and learning, that it takes all hands on deck to build a strong and positive family culture especially in the use of technology.

Through the session, the children got to learn about how they could begin their journey towards independence in their use of devices and how they could work with their daddies and mummies in building up self-discipline as they grow. Parents in attendance managed to get a better idea on how they could get their children to work with them in building healthy device-use boundaries.

Difficult behaviours in children and teenagers are usually indicative of a sense of being overwhelmed and also unmet needs that they do not possess the mental or emotional capacity to verbalise and deal with.

When we read their behaviours this way, it puts us in a better stead to extend patience and love in the situation and bring them back to a state of calm, where we can help them learn how to address those needs properly in the moment and for the future.

But if all that we see is a difficult child before us and that this is the umpteenth time that this difficult situation is before us, the outcome might turn out quite differently.

Following up from our previous infographic on brain states, here's another to illustrate the outcomes of the interactions of brain states between parent and child.

The human brain takes on a back-to-front development. As adults, our brains are fully matured biologically; the parts responsible for self-regulation and control are in place for us to be able to better manage our emotions. Not so for our children and teenagers, as those parts of the brain are the last to develop and mature, usually in the twenties.

A child who’s gotten punished and asked to stand in a corner to reflect will have no capacity to reflect. Trying to talk sense and logic or giving solutions when a child has gotten emotional would likely fuel the spiraling into the terror brain state. A constantly aroused and alarmed brain in a constantly stressful environment marked by threats of punishment and detachment would likely be mostly showing fight, flight, freeze or fawn reactions to protect oneself, unable to engage in problem-solving.

This quote is taken from a book on weaning babies, but it rings true through the different stages of our children’s growth, that it begins with parental regulation, transits into co-regulation, aiming towards and reaching self regulation in the end.

When the child speaks rudely at others, he has yet to learn how and given the opportunities to speak politely. When he goes into a meltdown when he doesn’t get what he wants, he has yet to learn to regulate his emotions and engage in healthy negotiation. When he is unable to stop his activities when he is supposed to, he has yet to learn and exercise self discipline. We can either fault and punish them to suppress these behaviours, or we can use these scenarios as feedback and use them as opportunities to scaffold what is needed for them to become polite, self-regulated and self-disciplined.

This is the autonomy and power we have as our children's parents.

Behind every behaviour lies a certain feeling motivated by a certain thought, driven by a certain value, and undergirded by a certain belief.

If we can look beyond the things that our children do and say, especially those that are hurtful and inappropriate, it will put us in a better position to help them choose better and more positive alternatives the next time as we walk with them through their feelings and thinking.

When we engage their hearts, enrich their minds and enable them to make better choices as they grow, we nurture them from the inside-out, and we can be more assured that the positive behaviours that they pick up along way will be there with them for the long haul.

Wishing all a great weekend ahead!
