Doubts cast over Elon Musk's Twitter bot claims

Filings
made by Elon Musk's legal team in his battle with Twitter have been questioned by leading bot researchers. Botometer - an online tool that tracks spam and fake accounts - was used by Mr Musk in a countersuit against Twitter. Using the tool, Mr Musk's team estimated that 33% of "visible accounts" on the social media platform were "false or spam accounts".

Mr Yang questioned the methodology used by Mr Musk's team, and told the BBC they had not approached him before using the tool. Mr Musk is currently in dispute with Twitter, after trying to pull out of a deal to purchase the company for $44bn (£36.6bn). In July, Mr Musk said he no longer wished to purchase the company, as he could not verify how many humans were on the platform. A court case is due in October in Delaware, where a judge will rule on whether Mr Musk will have to buy it.

Andrew Tate banned from Facebook and Instagram

Meta
has banned influencer Andrew Tate from Facebook and Instagram for violating its policies. The former kickboxer rose to fame in 2016 when he was removed from TV show Big Brother over a video which appeared to depict him attacking a woman. He went on to gain notoriety online, with Twitter banning him for saying women should "bear responsibility" for being sexually assaulted.

He had 4.7 million Instagram followers at the time his account was removed. Meta said it had removed the kickboxing star from its platforms for violating its policies on dangerous organisations and individuals but did not provide further details. Andrew Tate's videos - promoting misogyny and targeting women - have come to prominence this summer with many teens commenting on just how much he's appearing on their social media feeds.

Instagram, YouTube discourage users from sharing videos to TikTok

Threatened
by the meteoric rise of Chinese short-form video platform TikTok, Meta-owned Instagram and Google-owned YouTube have introduced new features to discourage their short-video app users from cross-platform sharing.

According to reports, when trying to download an edited clip to an iPhone in Instagram Reels, the audio from the clip just disappeared. Creators can still post the same Reels video to TikTok but they need to first upload the video to Instagram, edit it, download that clip and send it over to TikTok,Athe report mentioned late on Thursday. "We've added a watermark to the Shorts you download so your viewers can see that the content you're sharing across platforms can be found on YouTube Shorts," the company added.

Elon Musk sends social media into frenzy with Twitter joke about buying Man Utd

It
was news no-one expected, and for a while it sent social media and the football world into a frenzy. Just after 01:00 BST on Wednesday, Elon Musk - who is reported to have a net worth of $270bn (£223bn) according to Forbes - posted on Twitter: "Also, I'm buying Manchester United ur welcome." Cue pandemonium on the social network, with the American's tweet receiving more than 400,000 likes.

They are bottom of the Premier League after two defeats, star player Cristiano Ronaldo could leave, while new signings are failing to materialise. The club has been in decline since Sir Alex Ferguson retired as manager in 2013, and fingers have been pointed at the Glazer family, who have owned the club since 2005. There have been multiple protests against the Glazers' ownership in recent years - including one in May 2021 which caused the Red Devils' match against Liverpool to be postponed.

TikTok preps for midterm misinformation chaos

TikTok
’s head of US safety, Eric Han, outlined how the company plans to combat the threat of harmful misinformation. First, TikTok will begin rolling out its Election Center this week in order to provide authoritative voting information in the coming weeks and results from the Associated Press once they are reported.

While TikTok banned paid political advertising in 2019, Han said the platform is emphasizing the existing policy regarding prohibit paid influencer content. Throughout the 2020 election cycle, campaign and political groups, including the Biden-Harris campaign, collaborated with influencers across platforms to reach voters who were spending more time online as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. “TikTok does not allow paid political ads, and that includes content influencers are paid to create,” Han said in the Wednesday blog post.

Apple employee's job threatened over viral TikTok video

As
a secretive company, Apple has rules and guidelines that its employees must follow, in order for the iPhone maker to closely manage its public image. It appears that the policies could result in one employee losing their job at the company, after providing safety and security advice via social media.

Apple hardware engineer Paris Campbell gained overnight fame by posting to TikTok in response to a video about a stolen iPhone, and threats to the victim over the release of personal information unless she removed the Apple ID from the device. Campbell's video explained that the threats were minimal, as the user's data was safe and not accessible to the thief. Campbell also explained that the threats to remove the Apple ID were so that it freed the device up for immediate resale, giving it more value to the thief than if it were kept locked and broken up for parts.

ELON MUSK MAY BE PLANNING TO LAUNCH HIS OWN SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORM ‘X.COM’ TO RIVAL TWITTER

It
seems the Twitter-Elon Musk saga just refuses to die down. With Twitter suing Musk for backing out of the $44 billion acquisition deal, and the court proceedings set to begin on October 17, the Tesla mogul recently teased that he was planning to launch his own social media platform.

Responding to a Twitter user who asked if Musk had ever considered creating his own social media platform, in case the Twitter deal fell apart, Musk simply responded by saying “X.com.”. While most of these derivative platforms are not able to sustain themselves beyond a year or two, Trump’s Truth Social, and India’s very own Koo, have done well for themselves. Koo claims that they have over 7-8 million active users every month and are expecting 100 million downloads of their app, by the end of 2022.

Instagram can track online activity of users: Ex-Google engineer

A
former Google engineer has said Instagram might be tracking the online activity of its users. Felix Krause, the founder of fastlane, claimed in a blog on August 10 that on Apple's mobile operating system iOS, the app of Instagram as well as Facebook, render all third-party links and ads within its app using a custom in-app browser.

He added that links to external websites are rendered inside the Instagram app, instead of using the built-in Safari. The former Google engineer pointed out that the Instagram app injects its JavaScript code into every website shown, including when clicking on ads. “Even though pcm.js doesn’t do this, injecting custom scripts into third-party websites allows them to monitor all user interactions, like every button & link tapped, text selections, screenshots, as well as any form inputs, like passwords, addresses and credit card numbers,” he said.

Musk Sells More Tesla (TSLA) Stock Amid Twitter Showdown

Musk
sold 7.92 million Tesla shares between Friday, Aug. 5, and Tuesday, Aug. 9, worth around $6.88 billion, the SEC filing revealed. The SpaceX and Tesla CEO's sales come less than a week after shareholders in the electric vehicle (EV) company approved a 3-for-1 stock split, which takes effect on Aug. 24.

In a Tuesday night tweet, Musk told his 103 million followers that he was done selling shares in the EV automaker: "In the (hopefully unlikely) event that Twitter forces this deal to close *and* some equity partners don't come through, it is important to avoid an emergency sale of Tesla stock."However, the Tesla co-founder posted a similar tweet on April 28 after selling $8.5 billion shares, saying he had no more planned sales in the company.

Elon Musk sells $6.9bn of Tesla shares as Twitter lawsuit looms

Tesla
boss Elon Musk has sold another 7.92 million shares in the electric car maker, worth around $6.88bn (£5.7bn). The sales took place after the firm's annual shareholder meeting last week, regulatory filings show. Mr Musk says he needs the money in case he is forced to buy Twitter for $44bn.

The multi-billionaire is currently embroiled in a legal battle with the social media platform after saying last month he would pull out of a deal to buy it. After news of the share sale was made public Mr Musk responded to a tweet asking whether he had finished selling Tesla shares with "yes", adding that he needed the money in case he was forced to buy Twitter and was unable to secure some of the funding for the deal.
