Elon Musk sells Tesla shares worth $6.9bn as Twitter trial looms

Elon
Musk has sold $6.9bn (£5.7bn) worth of shares in Tesla after admitting that he could need the funds if he loses a legal battle with Twitter and is forced to buy the social media platform. The Tesla chief executive walked away from a $44bn deal to buy Twitter in July.

The move came as observers of the Twitter row speculated whether Musk will seek a settlement. Legal experts have said that Musk will struggle to win his case, having signed an agreement to buy the business, leaving him with the option of offering Twitter a substantial settlement to head off the threat of being ordered to spend $44bn on a company he no longer wants to buy.

Over 3,200 apps leak Twitter API keys, some allowing account hijacks

Cybersecurity
researchers have uncovered a set of 3,207 mobile apps that are exposing Twitter API keys to the public, potentially enabling a threat actor to take over users' Twitter accounts that are associated with the app. The discovery belongs to cybersecurity firm CloudSEK, which scrutinized large app sets for potential data leaks.

When integrating mobile apps with Twitter, developers will be given special authentication keys, or tokens, that allow their mobile apps to interact with the Twitter API. When a user associates their Twitter account with this mobile app, the keys also will enable the app to act on behalf of the user, such as logging them in via Twitter, creating tweets, sending DMs, etc. As having access to these authentication keys could allow anyone to perform actions as associated Twitter users.

Elon Musk Accuses Twitter of Fraud in Countersuit Over $44B Deal

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has accused Twitter of fraud in his countersuit against the social media company. Twitter filed a lawsuit against the billionaire to force him to go through with the $44 billion deal to buy the platform. “The Musk parties bring their counterclaims for breach of contract and rescission on the basis of Twitter’s fraud.”

“Twitter was miscounting the number of false and spam accounts on its platform, as part of its scheme to mislead investors about the company’s prospects by focusing on its purported hundreds of millions of mDAU,” Musk alleged. The social media company defines monetizable daily active users (mDAU) as “users who logged in and accessed Twitter on any given day through Twitter.com or Twitter applications that are able to show ads.” Twitter filed a series of rebuttals to Musk’s countersuit Thursday, accusing the Tesla CEO of cherry-picking numbers.

Twitter fixes security bug that exposed at least 5.4 million accounts

Twitter says it has fixed a security vulnerability that allowed threat actors to compile information of 5.4 million Twitter accounts, which were listed for sale on a known cybercrime forum. The vulnerability allowed anyone to enter a phone number or an email address of a known user and learn if it was tied to an existing Twitter account, potentially exposing the identities of pseudonymous accounts.

In a brief statement published Friday, the microblogging giant said, “if someone submitted an email address or phone number to Twitter’s systems, Twitter’s systems would tell the person what Twitter account the submitted email addresses or phone number was associated with, if any.” Twitter said it fixed the bug in January — six months after the bug was initially introduced to its codebase — after a bug bounty report by a security researcher, who was awarded $6,000 for disclosing the vulnerability.

Meta will not take commission from creators on Instagram and Facebook until 2024

Meta
CEO Mark Zuckerberg has said that the company will "hold off on any revenue sharing" until 2024, a one-year extension of his prior pledge to not charge a commission until 2023.

According to Engadget, creators on Instagram and Facebook will have another year to make money from the apps without Meta taking a cut from their earnings. The move will cover monetisation features where creators directly charge their fans -- paid online events, subscriptions, newsletters and badges sold during livestreams, reports Engadget. It does not apply to Meta's advertising-related revenue sharing features for Reels or other video products, the report said.

Twitter board unanimously recommends Musk's takeover bid

In
addition to shareholder approval, Musk said that debt financing for the deal would need to come together. The billionaire has pledged $33.5 billion in equity financing and has received commitments from Morgan Stanley Senior Funding Inc. and other financial institutions for up to $13 billion in debt financing.

He also said that he is waiting for a resolution to his dispute with Twitter over the total percentage of spam and fake accounts on the platform, which he called "a very significant matter." Though Twitter has maintained that spam and fake accounts make up less than 5% of its users, Musk believes the figure is at least 20%. He claimed that the company breached its obligations under the merger agreement by 'actively resisting and thwarting' his right to information on the spam and fake account data.

Twitter testing new edit feature for Tweets, screenshot spotted

Twitter might soon get some of the most-awaited features like an edit tweet option and a dislike button. The edit button has been the single biggest demand that the platform may have witnessed since it became operational.

Unlike what most Twitteratis have been demanding, the edit option does not apply to all tweets and it won’t be available for published tweets. Instead, the edit option is more like a warning. If Twitter detects that a tweet has any abusive or offensive word or phrase in it, Twitter will prompt the user to edit it before he/she publishes it. For instance, you are about to send a tweet that has some abusive text according to Twitter’s algorithm.

Elon Musk Says He Wants One Billion Users On Twitter

Elon
Musk pitched a vision Thursday to Twitter staff of a one-billion-user platform, but was hazy on potential layoffs, free speech limits and what's next in his chaotic buyout bid. While fielding questions in his first meeting with wary staffers, the Tesla chief offered no updates on his $44 billion deal that he has thrown into doubt in recent weeks.

Yet in comments from the employees-only virtual meeting of less than one hour, Bloomberg and New York Times reports based on leaks relayed his claimed passion for self-expression on the platform. The Tesla chief has already made comments on how he'd run the platform -- including lifting Donald Trump's ban -- but his words this time were addressed directly to workers' concerns. Musk told Twitter employees he personally favors moderate political positions, but that users should be able to say outrageous things, reports leaked from the meeting said.

Instagram’s Main Feed Is Going Full Screen

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that Instagram will soon begin testing a full screen redesign of its main feed.If you blinked you may have missed Zuckerberg’s announcement, as it was made via an Instagram story. Here are some screenshots showing a before (top) and after (bottom) comparison of the new design:

This makes Instagram look more like a TikTok clone, with the content taking up the entire length of the screen. A small area at bottom is reserved for navigation, while every other element is overlayed on the content. To remedy any confusion around the new design, Zuckerberg follows up by clarifying photos will continue to be an important part of Instagram. The redesign will not turn the Instagram into videos only.
