Peter has taught Persian History at Iranzamin College in Tehran, and then English in Kabul. He worked at the World Bank and then, from 1980 to 1994, in International Investment
Banking for Bankers Trust Company, furst in Turkey and then in International Capital Markets based in London but with frequent trips to the Middle East as well as Hong Kong, Taiwan, Indonesia, Thailand and China. In 1995, Peter co-founded Belgrave Capital Management, the first Hedge Fund in the United Kingdom to specialize in investing in Emerging Markets. Over the past 15 years Peter has organized and led seven private tours to Central Asia including to Turkmenistan in 2015 and to Tajikistan in 2011 with the specific goal of establishing Princeton in Asia (PiA) Fellowship opportunities in the region. Peter is a member of the Middle East Studies Association, the Royal Central Asian Society, the International Society for Iranian Studies, the Association for the Study of Persianate Societies, and he is Chair of the Advisory Council to the Near East Studies Department at Princeton University. He has published articles on Central Asia in the Journal of the Royal Society for Asian Studies and in Hali Magazine: the leading journal for the study of Islamic carpets and textiles. Peter is the author of Russian-Turkmen Encounters: The Caspian Frontier before the Great Game (2017), a study of Russian-Turkmen relations from 1550 to 1750. He holds a BA in Near Eastern Studies with Arabic and Persian language study from Princeton University and an MA in International Economics and Policy Studies from University of California, Berkeley.
