A paramedic is a medical professional, usually a member of the emergency medical service, who primarily provides pre-hospital advanced medical and trauma care.
He is not a doctor, nurse, or physician's assistant.
Paramedics may be required to:
Perform cardiac support for heart attack victims
Perform emergency respiratory procedures for people with blocked airways
Administer IV (intravenous) fluids
Bandage wounds
Stabilize head and neck injuries
Stabilize broken bones
Resuscitate drowning victims
Perform emergency childbirth procedures
Assess health situations
Administer medications
An emergency physician is a physician who works at the emergency department of a hospital to care for acutely ill patients.
