The author experienced this himself with Obama’s 2012 reelection campaign. The feeling of building something big together which had energized the 2008 election had largely subsided. The re-election campaign focused more on Obama as a person than the movement surrounding him. And the unofficial slogan “respect empower include” was amended by one telling word. It now went: “respect empower include win.”
The key message here is: It will be hard work to let go of our pyramid mindset – but the future demands it of us. 
Commencement speeches at university graduations are a good barometer for the things our society values. American radio station NPR recently compared 350 of them to determine the most common themes. Among the top five: “Don’t give up ” “Embrace failure ” and “Work hard.”
