Things look pretty bad at the moment according to even local leaders.

Likely because defenses there were never meant to be "front line" and turning them into front line defenses was not practical with the time/resources forces in the area had.

Ukraine may make gains here and in a few other areas, very hard-fought and ultimately temporarily as Russia finally corrects the undermanning of forces in these areas that made this possible in the first place.

Where Russian forces take the proper time and resources to defend, Ukrainian forces are unable to advance.
