ill-advisedly US Revoked Ethiopia AGOA Eligibility: A Blow to Millions of low-income Workers WelfareEthiopia is to be suspended from the United States’ tariff-free African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) in 60 days. According to Ethiopian Industrial Parks Development Corporation CEO:
• 30 out of 33 textile factories in the country’s industrial parks export apparel to the US under AGOA & have facilitated employment opportunities to 85,000 Ethiopians.
In 2020, nearly half of country’s export to US was under the AGOA - creating close to 230,000 job opportunities.
“Ethiopia's removal from the AGOA would deal a serious blow to the welfare of millions of low-income workers at a time when Ethiopia's manufacturing industry is registering record monthly output levels,” Mamo Mihretu, an adviser to Abiy, wrote in Foreign Policy magazine in October.
