We computed the implied volatility of GBPINR using prevailing implied volatilities in USDINR and GBPUSD in the OTC market. This allowed us to determine the value of GBPINR options.
In our analysis, we explored a scenario where a trader takes a short position in the GBPINR ATM straddle at the beginning of each week, from the 4th week until the 1st week, holding the trade until expiry without a stop loss. The resulting profit and loss per GBP from this trading strategy are shown in the provided matrix.
It's important to note that higher implied volatility in GBPINR compared to USDINR may seem attractive due to the potential for higher option premiums. However, it's crucial to consider several factors. The elevated implied volatility in GBPINR is a reflection of its significantly higher realized volatilities.
GBPINR is influenced by various global events, including US data, risk sentiments, UK data, and movements in USDINR. Unlike the RBI, the UK central bank doesn't intervene in the currency market to reduce GBP volatility.
Therefore, it's essential to carefully assess the trader's outlook on the volatility or speed of GBPINR futures before selling a straddle or strangle in GBPINR. Blindly following higher implied volatilities without considering these factors may not be prudent.
