2021-12-08 18:18:56 How hard is it to get admitted to a prestigious US university?

Take the case of Ara Mambreyan, who won 6! International Olympiads only to be rejected by all American universities. (He eventually got admitted to Cambridge, managing to raise some funds to pay for hefty tuition.)

His example, however, is not rare: lots of students with almost perfect SATs, impressive achievements, and phenomenal extracurriculars get consistently rejected.

Ara argues that his Armenian citizenship was a determinant factor in his plentiful rejections. The mechanism behind this, he claims, is that universities have scarce funds for international students. Back in the day, I used to think precisely in the same way. I was convinced that Ivy League spots (especially the renowned trio of Harvard, Yale, and Princeton) are unavailable to Uzbek students.

In the previous years, I even recommended my mentees to deprioritize the Ivy League applications and focus on more tangible options instead. Nevertheless, Umid's admission to Yale and Williams was a game-changer for us. It elucidated interesting nuances in how the admissions process is constructed. It demonstrated the effectiveness of our approach.

Yes, students from Uzbekistan, Russia, or other Post-Soviet countries have minuscule chances of admission. Yet, being from those countries, we figured, also comes with a unique package of experiences, opinions, and cultural perspectives. What we did was highlight those experiences, showing tremendous value in having them.

Cases like Ara's show that it is incredibly difficult to gain admission to American universities. Cases like Umid's prove that getting accepted is still possible with the right strategy and a bit of luck.

2021-12-06 15:40:37 Best essay advice I got was to think about it this way…

How do you want an AO who just read your essay to complete this sentence: “Wow, we really need to admit this applicant because s/he is _____________.”

January 1 is fast approaching, and it’s time to work on those supplements! You don’t want to be doing these during your December break, so make a list of the ones you need to write and schedule when you will write them. Your future self thanks you

2021-12-03 16:03:19 Probably some of you got an idea or received a message to buy leaked SAT. So, I just want to remind why cheating is all the way a bad idea.

Cheating causes stress. When you cheat, you inevitably worry about getting caught. The stress of getting caught increases when you consider the possible consequences of your actions, such as getting in trouble. Even worse, you may have to develop a story to cover up your cheating, which can lead to getting trapped in a web of lies because it’s so difficult to keep your story straight when it never happened.

Cheating is unfair to you. Accomplishment feels good and helps build self-esteem and self-confidence. When you cheat, you are basically telling yourself that you do not believe in your own abilities.

Cheating is disrespectful. Tutors work hard to share knowledge to help you be successful in academics, career, and life. Cheating shows a lack of respect for the efforts of your teacher and your classmates who did the work.

Cheating kills trust. It only takes getting caught cheating one time to ruin trust. Even if you never cheat again, those in authority will always have a hard time trusting you and will likely be suspicious of your work. When others hear about your cheating, their opinion of you will be compromised.

Cheating can become a habit. People who cheat don’t usually do it one time. It becomes a habit that follows people throughout college and into their careers. Just like gambling or stealing, cheating can become a part of who you are and spread into other areas of your life.

Cheating eventually leads to failure. By skipping the hard work involved in learning, you will never develop the important traits of persistence, dedication, diligence, and sacrifice. Success takes hard work, and cheating is the easy way out. Eventually, you will find that it is difficult to achieve your goals without these important skills.

I remember two guys of NIS cheated on SAT and eventually, were expelled from school.

Cheating is embarrassing. Your actions define who you are to those around you. When you cheat, you are expressing yourself to others as untrustworthy, selfish, unintelligent, and disrespectful. In addition, many schools are developing tougher stances on cheating. Imagine your embarrassment when you are suspended for cheating or you discover that school personnel informed college admissions officers of your actions.

I remember one girl who got into Italian University by cheating on the test, but everyone, friends, classmates knew it, and under social pressure she had to drop out of the college by herself.
