A scientist photographed mid-experiment at Columbia University in Manhattan in 1948. “Kubrick learned through the camera’s lens to be an acute observer of human interactions and to tell stories through images in dynamic narrative sequences,” says Corcoran. “He sometimes photographed unsuspecting subjects engaged in intimate interactions or caught others in the act of looking.”

This photo of a young couple is from Kubrick’s photo series, “Life and Love on the New York City Subway” from 1947. His assignments ranged from teen couples to marital jealousy and unsuspecting subway portraits. “When Kubrick started out selling his photos, he sometimes staged them with his friends on subway platforms or in movie theatres,” says Corcoran. “Photographic assignments taught him to tell a story, or reveal a character, through photos.”
