On fairy tales (2)
A widely known fairytale is the one of Hansel & Gretel. The two children have poor parents, so the whole family suffers from hunger. In desperation the parents abandon their children in the forest.
While they stumble through the woods, they meet a woman, who turns out to be an evil witch. Why she lives alone in the woods can be speculated, but maybe she was expelled from 109 villages.
The witch first seem to help the children, but plans to eat them. Hansel is forced to eat a lot in a cage, while his sister is threatened to work for the witch.
Ultimately it is shown that the witch is not an evil genius with an IQ of 120, but she is fooled easily into a fiery death in an oven.
The children find many coins and gems in the witches house, which from now on help them to survive.
What can be learnt from this fairytale is discussed a lot, but the depictions of the witch and her house are obvious.
