My heart goes out to the families who have lost loved ones in Texas.
I’ve just heard about the tragedy.
The debate on gun control is a big one. I have seen over the course of my short life that laws passed in times of trauma have had far greater consequences than ever realized at the moment they became law.
Some feel it’s at times exactly like this that laws must be passed. The pain and anger drives the caring individuals to make a change.
However even if guns were completely eliminated from our reality there would still be our mental health crisis that we have yet to handle. These people who are suffering would use a vehicle to drive into a crowded place or use another object as a weapon.
The root of this tragedy is what needs to be addressed.
I’m also unfamiliar with gun laws in the USA. I’ve heard some calling for more training and psych evaluations. Also raising the age someone needs to be in order to own a firearm. These may be wise changes to be made. I’m still learning about how it works in the USA.
I just mailed my gun license in for approval last week. I had to take a 2 day course and pass a written and practical exam. Even with this, I am still only allowed to own certain firearms.
In Canada we are not allowed to use a gun for self defence in any circumstance. Even pointing a gun at someone is illegal.
Yet when I was in high school there was a kid in my class who had guns and even offered to sell me one. His family was in the drug business.
Criminals will never obey the law.
Those with deep pain and trauma who suffer in silence will find a way to inflict harm on others without regard for laws either.
Healing our culture and our communities is paramount. While at the same time protecting schools from unwelcome guests.
