​In March 2018, the last male northern white rhinoceros named Sudan died at the age of 45. He lived a happy, long life, leaving behind a daughter named Najin and a granddaughter named Fata. Only two representatives of this species remain on the entire planet.

The fate of the white rhinoceros is a perfect illustration of devastating human activities. Back at the beginning of the 20th century, there were about half a million northern white rhinos in Africa and Asia. Uncontrolled development in their habitat, pollution and poaching for horns led to a sad outcome.

This is interesting: despite its name, the white rhinoceros is not white at all, but dark gray. The fact is that its name comes from the Boer language, where it is consonant with the word "white.

It turns out that there is still hope for the revival of the northern white rhinoceros. Scientists have managed to collect Sudan's genetic material, with which they plan to impregnate the two remaining females. Such an operation requires a lot of money, so funds are currently being raised to carry it out.
