Open Date: April 16, 2021 Close Date: May 14, 2021 We Are: Fermilab is
America’s premier laboratory for particle physics and accelerator
research, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. We support
discovery science experiments in Illinois and South Dakota and in
locations around the world, including deep underground mines in
Canada, mountaintops in Arizona and Chile, and the South Pole. The
Particle Physics Division seeks candidates for an Applications
Physicist position in the Muon Department. The Application Physicist’s
portfolio will initially include constructing, commissioning and
operating state-of-the-art experimental instrumentation working at the
Fermilab site in Illinois. The Muon Department seeks to create a
welcoming environment where all members are encouraged to work towards
our common scientific goals and everyone’s contributions are equally
valued. Contributions vary extensively across technical skill sets and
human experiences. This diversity of tools and talent allows us to
tackle together some of the most challenging questions facing science
today in dynamic and exciting ways. The current opening is to play a
leading role in building and operating the Mu2e experiment that will
perform the world’s most sensitive search for charged lepton flavor
violation by searching for the direct conversion of a muon into an
electron in the field of an aluminum nucleus. Work will begin on
completing construction of the Mu2e tracker at Fermilab and progress
into commissioning and operating the tracker over the next several
years. As experiment operations are long-term and at times,
high-pressure, we strongly encourage a healthy work-life balance that
helps enable a long-term commitment without burning out on short-term
tasks. You Will • Solve problems that require creative solutions using
available resources • Construct and integrate state-of-the-art
instrumentation into the Mu2e experiment in collaboration with an
international team of scientists, engineers, and technicians including
students at all levels • Design, prototype, and implement experiment
upgrades to increase uptime or improve performance • Participate in
research and development of future scientific instrumentation for
future experiments. • Abide by and be responsible for performing all
duties in accordance with all environmental, health, and safety
regulations and practices pertinent to this position. • Respect,
understand and value individual differences that embody the principles
of diversity. We Are Looking For • Ph.D. in Physics with experience in
experiment operations • Demonstrated ability to overcome adversity,
inside or outside a laboratory environment • Ability to work with and
support a diverse base of scientific users Application Instructions
Interested candidates should submit the following application
materials via Academic Jobs Online (AJO): 1) Curriculum Vitae
including a list of selected publications. 2) Statement of Interest in
the position including examples of overcoming adverse situations
either inside or outside a laboratory environment. 3) Statement of
Workplace Values and how those values align with or would enhance the
Muon Department’s Statement of Values available at
https://ppd.fnal.gov/muon/values.html 4) Minimum three, maximum five
Reference Letters (to be submitted by the reference writers at the AJO
site). https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/application/18486 For
