World Sparrow Day is a day designated to raise awareness of the house sparrow observed on 20 March.
It is an international initiative by the Nature Forever Society of India in collaboration with the Eco-Sys Action Foundation (France) and numerous other national and international organisations across the world.
The sparrow numbers are dwindling across India.
Experts and ornithologists attribute various factors including rapid urbanisation and disappearance of habitat suitable to the bird and non-availability of food as fruit bearing trees have been replaced by ornamental plants and the laws and gardens are manicured which does not support insects to sustain sparrows.
