HOW TO ACTIVATE COOL VOCAB Hi guys, this is the first in a series of posts where I will show you how you can DOUBLE your accuracy and range of vocabulary in a few simple steps. As a specialist in exam prep, where nearly all students possess high level competency, if there is one gap, it is usually in the learning and
implementation of relevant/topical vocabulary.
So what do I mean by that? Take the theme
JOBS. Most students possess the
generic vocabulary to paraphrase around specific lexis but if they can use that relevant/topical vocab that most (educated) natives do, then a 9.0 in the exam is a dead cert.
Compare:
- One of the key prerequisites in obtaining a degree in the medical profession is diligence as most courses may stretch to 6 years.
- If you want to be a qualified doctor, you need to work long and hard because the degree programs can last for 6 years.
Which one sounds more awesome if, for example, writing a formal essay?
So where you do you get such English from if not always from me? Yep, real sources. Go online. Find an article of some particular theme like those you'd get in an exam: environment, money, fashion etc.
And here's what to do:
1) Highlight chunks of language even those you might know because they are useful. If some items seem to absurd, specific to some cultural aspect or you feel you won't ever use them, then ignore them
2) Write all those down in a vocab list and go over them 20 times
3) Try writing your own summary or speak aloud playing with the combinations of chunks whilst employing your existing knowledge of English to link everything together appropriately.
These real sources often (Not always; you will need to search sometimes) will provide you with so much rich topical vocabulary that will charm the pants off your examiner. If you took the theme ENVORINMENT, honestly, 3 good articles can provide you with a hugeeeee database that can get you a 9.0 in the exam. A little bit of work can go a long way.
So check out my examples in the pictures below and enjoy!
