GOD NEVER FORGETS HIS PROMISES

Scripture Reading: Exodus 3

And I have said I will bring you up out of the affliction of Egypt to the land of the Canaanites and the Hittites and the Amorites and the Perizzites and the Hivites and the Jebusites, to a land flowing with milk and honey.” Exodus 3:17

God met Moses in the burning bush more than 600 years after He made a promise to Abraham. That is a very long time. In the intervening period, a lot had happened to Abraham and his descendants. Abraham had died, his son Isaac had died, and his grandson Jacob had moved the family to Egypt. Four hundred years of sojourn in Egypt had turned the descendants of Abraham into slaves in a foreign land.

On the surface, it appeared as if all the encounters that Abraham had with God had amounted to nothing. The land of Egypt was almost ten thousand kilometres away from the Promised Land. To complicate matters, the Hebrews had stopped worshipping the God of Abraham and forgotten all about their spiritual roots. Yet, God did not forget!

God did not forget the promise He made to Abraham. Time and distance could not limit the I AM. The Lord reaffirmed the ancient pledge He had made to Abraham. In the darkest hour of Abraham’s descendants, the Lord appeared to Moses as a light, burning in a bush.

This same promise-keeping God is the God we serve. He is the One we read about in the Bible and pray to, in the name of Jesus. If the Lord could reach back 600 years to activate a pledge made to a man who was now dead, you can rest in His word.

The Lord assured Moses that He would give the land Abraham had walked on hundreds of years ago to his descendants. Today, you can entrust your children and grandchildren to the Lord. If you serve Him faithfully, He will visit your descendants in their time and show them His sure mercies.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, you keep your promises from generation to generation. I trust you to do what you have promised. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

WHAT IS YOUR NAME, LORD?

Scripture Reading: Exodus 3

Then Moses said to God, “Indeed, when I come to the children of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they say to me, ‘What is His name?’ what shall I say to them?” Exodus 3:13

Having been in Egypt for close to 400 years, Israel had lost touch with the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. They knew the gods of Egypt and worshipped some of them. Moses asked for the name of the God who was speaking to him for two reasons:

1. Moses needed to assure himself that he was talking to the right deity. He had seen a supernatural event, but what kind of supernatural force was it? Having lived in the royal house of Pharaoh, Moses knew the Egyptians could perform supernatural acts. He wanted to assure himself that he was communicating with the Almighty God – the God of Abraham.

Like Moses, we also need to test supernatural events and know which power is behind them. Not everything supernatural is attributable to Jehovah.

2. Moses needed to show the difference between the God of Israel and the gods of the Egyptians. The Hebrews knew that anyone who wanted to deliver them from Egypt would have to contend with the gods of the land. They needed to be assured that their Deliverer was more powerful than their oppressors.

In the days of Moses, the names of deities represented the scope of their power. There were deities related to the heavenly bodies, rivers, animals, fire, metals and activities such as wars, famine and love. The name that God would give to Moses would determine the scope of His power. The name would determine if He was strong enough to deliver Israel from the hand of the Egyptians.

As the representative of God, Moses had to disclose His character to the Jewish people. Of course, God’s name “Jehovah” had been known centuries ago and was familiar to the patriarchs. What Moses asked was, “What does Your name mean? What kind of God are You?”

What name did God give to Moses? The name He gave him, revealed the scope of His power.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, magnify your name in my situation. Let all the world know that you are God Most High. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

THE LORD WILL BE WITH YOU

Scripture Reading: Exodus 3

So He said, “I will certainly be with you. And this shall be a sign to you that I have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall serve God on this mountain.” Exodus 3:12

This was God’s response to Moses, ‘I will certainly be with you’. There is nothing more com-forting and reassuring than those words coming from the Creator of the Universe. Pharaoh and the royal house of Egypt were against Moses, but God was with him. The Hebrew slaves did not want Moses as their leader, but God was with him. The Lord’s response to Moses was focused on Himself and not on those who were against Moses. It was as if the Lord was patting Moses on the back and telling him, ‘Relax, I’m here’.

After assuring Moses of His presence, the Lord gave Moses a sign. The sign was a physical thing that would happen to show Moses that God was with him. Strangely, God’s sign to Moses did not directly mention his fears. The sign dealt with the place where God would lead Moses and the Hebrews to.

God’s sign to Moses was right there in the place where God appeared to him. The place where God introduced Himself to Moses was the place God had chosen to introduce Himself to Israel. The sign implied two things:

1. The first is that Israel will be delivered from Egypt. That means there was nothing that Pharaoh and the royals of Egypt could do to stop Moses’s mission. Not only would Moses stand before Pharaoh, but he would also overcome Pharaoh’s threat.

2. The second implication is that Israel would accept Moses. The Lord told Moses that he would bring the people out of Egypt to worship in the place where he met God. If Moses was going to lead them out of Egypt, it meant that the Hebrews would accept him as their leader. They would follow him and he would bring them to the same place where he met God.

God sees the end from the beginning. He doesn’t fret over our fears as we do. When we get panicky over all the things facing us, the Lord simply points us to the end of the matter. He showed Moses that everything would end up well to his advantage.

Today, He wants you also to know that everything will end up well to His glory.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, you know the end from the beginning. I trust you to bring me out of every battle in triumph. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

WHEN WE FEEL INADEQUATE

Scripture Reading: Exodus 3

But Moses said to God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh, and that I should bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?” Exodus 3:11

Moses felt inadequate for the task that the Lord had chosen him to perform. He had fled Egypt after his first failed attempt to fight the oppression of Israel. When Moses decided to fight on the side of the oppressed Hebrews, he supposed that they would recognize his efforts. He was gravely mistaken. The Hebrews rejected him as a deliverer and questioned his motives. Moses lived with that sense of failure for 40 years.
Let’s consider the questions Moses asked the Lord.

1. How can I stand before Pharaoh? Moses was a persona non grata in Egypt. Though he had lived almost all of his life in the house of Pharaoh, he betrayed the Egyptian Royal Family when he took sides with the Hebrew slaves. To Moses, going to face Pharaoh might have felt like a mouse attending a party of cats. He knew the power of the Pharaoh and how vicious it crushed opponents.

2. How can I bring Israel out of Egypt? The Hebrews rejected Moses. How could he go back to the same people who rejected him? Any suggestion for Moses to go back to Egypt as the Hebrews' unelected leader might have sounded ridiculous.

Have you ever felt unworthy to stand before some people? Maybe like Moses, you also offended a powerful ‘pharaoh’, and now you sense God telling you to go back. Is the Lord sending you to a people or place that rejected you?

Our God is relentless in His purposes. When He has His eyes on us, He doesn’t blink. The Lord keeps His gaze on us and continues to see our potential when all we see is our record. Don’t be amazed when the same God who called Moses to go and face people he was afraid of also calls you to do the same. He is the same God, and His ways are the same.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, I feel inadequate to do all the things you want me to do. Fortify me by your Spirit for my mission. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
