A proposal to repeal Virginia’s ban on same-sex marriage currently contained in the state Constitution was defeated by a Republican-majority committee in the House Friday.

The committee panel, which had four Republican members and one Democrat lawmaker, defeated a proposed constitutional amendment Friday that would have ultimately given voters the option to decide whether a section of state code banning same-sex marriage should be repealed.

HB 1254 would make it a class B felony – on par with manslaughter and punishable by a 10-year, $20,000 fine – to perform gender-affirming surgery on someone under 18.

“Final vote shows 66 yea, 25 nay, 3 absent/not voting. House bill 1254 is declared passed,” said House Speaker, Rep. Dennis Johnson, R-Devils Lake.

Another bill that passed – HB 1474 – would require collection of vital statistics to align with sex assigned at birth.

“You shouldn’t be finding a lot of prostate cancer among females, which you would if you don’t actually report based on their biological sex,” said Rep. SuAnn Olson, R-Baldwin.

The UN is reported to be considering a motion next week to condemn all settlements by Israel; the organization is expected to demand their immediate halt and reversal. 

“His UN Ambassador must veto the anti-Israel resolution in front of the UN Security Council and send a clear message that the U.S. stands with Israel,” Stefanik wrote. “Israel is the only country in the world treated with this level of contempt from the United Nations.”

The congresswoman argued that while “China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea threaten our world, the UN’s priorities are egregiously misaligned by working to prevent Israel from exercising its sovereignty.”
