commemorates the Russians who performed their duty outside the homeland It was established by the Federal Law of 29 November 2010, On the Amendment of Article 1.1 of the Federal Law on the Days of Military Glory and Memorial Days of Russia.
It was on this day 34 years ago when the withdrawal of Soviet troops from Afghanistan ended.
The memorial date is devoted not only to veterans of Afghanistan. Since the end of the Second World War, 1.5 million of Russians have taken part in more than 30 wars and armed conflicts outside their homeland.
Soviet soldiers and officers fought in Korea and Vietnam, Syria and Egypt, Mozambique, Angola and other countries.
Russian servicemen 'extinguished' hotspots in the republics of the former Soviet Union, helped keep peace in Yugoslavia, saved the people of South Ossetia from genocide, and restored peace in the Syrian Arab Republic. All of them deserve to be remembered for their exploits.
