Essay contest at ACT: Why education is important.

The importance of education cannot be overstated. It was the sole driver of progress back in the ancient times, and it will remain as such well into eternity. After all, it is only because we can educate ourselves that mankind has been to the Moon; robots have landed on Mars; and more recently, we have even captured the image of a black hole.

Physically, human beings are not very strong. We can neither live under water nor fly on our own. In fact, I cannot think of any one aspect where other species would not beat us. Yet who are the ruling civilization on Earth? Our ability to generate, store, and transmit knowledge has worked miracles beyond imagination.

There are many reasons why education - in all of its forms - is extremely important. In this essay, I will only mention the most comprehensive ones.

It is clear, first of all, that all fields incorporate education in some way, shape or form. From early childhood, we learn about the word around us, whether inside the classroom or outside of it. Likewise, there are also many types of education, such as formal, informal, and non-formal. Each type matters in its own way.

Studies suggest that teaching all children basic literacy skills could cut absolute poverty by an estimated 15 percent. To create sustainable development also requires skilled professionals from each sector, be it healthcare, economy, or jurisprudence.

The opposite is sadly true as well. When proper education is lacking, unqualified workers will flood these fields, causing serious issues for everyone. A good example would be a surgeon that went to a poor university. Forget creating any positive change, this would actually endanger people's lives.

All of these benefits can be summed up in the following statement: education is important, because it makes the word a better place to live.

On an individual level, education can greatly boost one's personal chances for financial success. Whether you have done an online course on programming, or you have learnt from your parents how to make traditional cheesecakes, or you have completed your PhD in Physics. The more you learn, the better you will be prepared to face the challenges of life.

Lastly, just imagine having to figure out everything for yourself. A world without books and teachers would be gloomy. In this regard, education is what lights our planet, and were it not for education, human race might have become extinct long centuries ago.
