You might have heard about the new project of Facebook company recently, named Metaverse.
The first thing came to my mind while reading the news about it was:
Facebook = abusing personal data
Metaverse = abusing personal metadata
Although they've only introduced it as a concept for now, but one (as me) may wonder how are they going to ruin people's lives this time by this huge project.
For those who are unfamiliar with Metaverse (they are not so creative in making names), let me explain it in summary:
The company is going to build a virtual space in which people can do different routines like shopping, working, communicating, gaming, etc. etc., and may need a VR headset for better experience. At the first sight, it might sound interesting and exciting, but if we think deeper about it, this question would come to our minds: is it really good or useful?
We are almost aware of this fact that how Instagram (for example) can harm people's lives by some simple posts from celebrities or even regular people. Like when someone spends lots of money on buying unnecessary things they see in an advertisement on a famous person's page or when they decide to do lots of plastic surgeries, gel injections for cheeks and lips..., threatening their health just to look like someone else,... .
Even spending many hours of their precious time (that they can spend it on doing something great in the real life) on watching lots of videos and pictures which only can result in being unsatisfied with their own lives, can be harmful.
This can make us more concerned when it comes to our young generation as we see our teenagers are in social networks for hours instead of reading some good books, or trying to do the things in which they're talented.
I always think social media is a powerful tool that can be used in a helpful way or harmful way, and when it's not in the right hands ( as a company like Facebook), it could turn into a silent weapon which targets the minds, by controlling them and distracting them from what needs the real attention.
Now if we imagine it in a more powerful and interesting condition, like a VR space, and how much time and money people would spends on it, we can get the conclusion of its negative impacts.
Facebook will be successful in this project or not, we don't know, but what we know for sure is that this company isn't reliable, and changing the name won't change the objectionable background of theirs.
I'll be glad if let me know your opinions about it in the comments.
