It seems Putin never had a real strong political "heir". From what is known about Putin, he is terrified of competition and opposition (he physically destroyed such people for decades), so he is surrounded by a grey mass of people who do what they are told, unprofessional corrupt cowards or open criminals. There are no leaders who could overtake power and suggest a plan "B" that would be acceptable for Russia, Ukraine and the West.

So it seems that chaos can be reigning at the moment among those close to Putin, and decisions are made in haste and panic. We might soon see top officials trying to shift the blame towards each other and, mainly, towards Putin. The pyramid headed by a deluded and sick maniac could be toppling.
