14 YEARS prison for journos who “embarrass” UK govt?? Official Secrets Act changes planned
Adapted UK legislation might treat journalists like foreign SPIES if they report on leaked information that casts the govt in a bad light, with up to 14 YEARS in prison, if recent consultations come into law.
The National Union of Journalists argued that “where whistleblowers believe that they have acted in the public interest, they should be able to make this case in court, and if a jury agree with them, be protected.”
The Home Office defended the move by claiming the nature of information spread makes public leaks far more damaging than some espionage efforts.
