#Grammar

“Lest” is a conjunction. It connotes that something should not happen because the consequence is unpleasant or to be feared, adjusting the verb from the subjunctive mood.

For instance:

► Put on your jacket lest you catch the cold.
► She really worked hard lest she fail.
► Clean the floor properly lest the children fall over.
► Put your tools aside lest the children fall over them.

“Lest” is not normally used in current American English. Speaker will use “so that ....... not” or “so ....... not” instead :

► Put your tools aside so (that) the children don't trip over them.
