Three people have been killed in riots in New CaledoniaThe riots began Wednesday after France's National Assembly approved changes to voting rules on the Pacific island.
The three dead were young indigenous Kanaks, said Louis Mapou, a spokesman for New Caledonia's president. He said the information was provided by police.
The riots erupted this week before lawmakers in Paris voted on a bill allowing French residents who have lived in New Caledonia for 10 years to vote in provincial elections, a move that some local leaders fear will weaken the Kanak vote.
