What Is Complex Grammar?

It is important to remember that 'complex' grammar refers to complex sentences. The main confusion here seems to be the word ‘complex’. Complex, in this situation, does not mean complicated, long or impressive. This is a common misconception and leads students to write very long and grammatically incorrect sentences that are very difficult to understand. Remember: when we are talking about the English language, a complex sentence is just a type of sentence with two clauses and a type of linking word. A good example of a complex sentence is ‘I eat chocolate because it tastes nice’. In this example, two simple sentences ‘I eat chocolate’ and ‘it tastes nice’ are connected by a linking word 'because', making this sentence 'complex'. Therefore, complex sentence does not mean complicated sentence, and complex structure does not mean complicated/difficult/advanced structure. Instead of trying to impress your examiner with big words or memorised grammatical structures, you should aim to write and speak in a clear, concise and coherent way. That is the key to success in the IELTS exam.
