Despite the entire South African power grid experiencing a shortfall of nearly 20 000MW this week, today is one of the few days where there will be no blackouts - why? Because the annual State of the Nation Address is taking place.
As a result of forcing the system to keep the lights on, the state-owned sole electricity supplier, Eskom, is pumping out half a million dollars (USD) per hour to keep their diesel generators running around the clock.
