In April 1856, a few years after the British-Xhosa wars, a 15 year old Xhosa girl experienced a vision during which she saw two spirits of her ancestors while playing near the mouth of a river in the eastern frontier of British Kaffraria. These ancestors told her the Xhosa will be able to push the Europeans into the sea and that they will receive healthier cattle and plenty of milk, but only if they killed all of their own cattle and crops.

The Xhosa chief was convinced by this and the Xhosa started killing their cattle (despite the appeals of the British Cape Colony).

Nearly 400 000 cattle were killed and it resulted in a famine that decreased the Xhosa population of British Kaffraria by more than 100 000.
