Despite Ramaphosa’s "soothing" words on June the 3rd that South Africans want and ought to "own the land", the ANC has now officially proposed that state custodianship of land be written into the constitution.
This should come as no surprise to anyone.
The lengthy and drawn out process of amending the South African constitution to explicitly allow the expropriation of property without compensation is still ongoing and will most likely speed up again.
Despite cheers from the naïve last week when the ad hoc committee was stuck in a deadlock due to the ANC opposing custodianship of property, the ANC has now turned around and fully backed state custodianship of property. This motion will be able to be voted in by Parliament as the ANC and EFF control the majority of seats in the house while being in agreement.
The South African government is working towards the same end goal as the communist Zimbabwean government did when they started with their Fast-Track Land Reform Program in 2000 after their previous "Willing Buyer, Willing Seller" mild approach failed.
However, unlike Mugabe and Co., the ANC is clearly aware of the consequences that followed thereafter for Zimbabwe and its people and are trying to minimise it as much as possible. Drawing out the land reform process decreases the perceived overall effect by the state-loving media and the victims (see Slow War).
The writing has been on the wall for years. Prepare as necessary.
