AT&T puts 5G base stations on drones
The American operator AT&T has developed an unmanned aerial vehicle capable of providing 5G coverage to an area with unstable communications. The device, called 5G Flying COW (from “Cell on Wings” - a cell on the wings), is able to provide reliable signal reception over an area of about 26 km², being at an altitude of about 100 m.
There are many possible use cases for such a drone, but AT&T's original idea is to provide first responders with communications where it might be needed urgently. The weakest point of modern drones is limited battery life: professional models can usually stay in the air for up to two hours, while consumer-grade devices rarely draw more than 40 minutes.
