The Little Mermaid in Copenhagen
The little mermaid, one of the biggest tourist attractions of Copenhagen. It’s inspired by the fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen. It’s also… one of the most overhyped monuments, like, ever:
It’s not so unique. There are 13 (!!!) «Little Mermaids» all over the world, including Madrid, Connecticut, Iowa, China and Virgin Islands.
It’s been vandalized more times than any little girl deserves. It’s been decapitated twice, a rubber penis was attached to her hand, it’s been cut with a saw, exploded and painted numerous times. Somehow, a bronze symbol from a fairy tale turned into an object for political statements.
And finally, behind her you won’t see the romantic sea views. There’s a port, with noisy cruise ships, touristic vessels and smoke. Unfortunately, the Little Mermaid is - most likely - just not worth your time.
