He spent the next six years in captivity, undergoing prolonged torture and mistreatment at the hands of the North Vietnamese. McCain’s decorations included the Sliver Star, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross and the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal. After leaving the Navy, McCain was elected to the US House of Representatives in 1982 and went on to serve in the senate from 1987 on. He was reelected five times as a US Senator for Arizona. Senator McCain also ran for president twice, in both 2000 and 2008. John McCain was an exemplary politician and dedicated Naval Officer. He will be missed, but his legacy will continue on.
