The Sherman: The M4A1
The first Shermans to roll off of American production lines were M4A1s, with Lima Locomotive Works completing the initial examples in February of 1942. The first production batch differed from later models by retaining the hull mounted, fixed .30 caliber machine guns of the T6 prototype. The fixed machine guns proved to be of little use and were quickly removed and their holes plugged. The M4A1 differed from the M4 by having a cast hull instead of a welded hull.
