Genie in a Bottle Rocket

In this spectacular photo, an F-106A Delta Dart of the California Air National Guard’s 194th Fighter Interceptor Squadron, is seen firing an inert AIR-2 Genie rocket. The Genie was an unguided air to air rocket that was capable of carrying a 1.5kt W25 nuclear warhead. It was in service with the United States Air Force from 1957 until 1985 and was cleared for use on the F-89 Scorpion, F-101B Voodoo, F-106, and the F-104 Starfighter, although the F-104 never carried the rocket operationally. The Genie was intended to be used against enemy bomber formations, being able to wipe out the whole group with one rocket. Thankfully, the Air Force never had to use it in combat and it was only ever tested live once, during the Plumbbob John nuclear tests on 19 July 1957.
