Hi, we'll talk a little about why the current channel exists.

Personally, I am really tired of memorising words and boosting vocabulary size. Right now the best approach for me is reading as much as I can. I read books and some online resources such as hacker news and work related articles (I'm a software engineer).

It kind of pays off and right now I can communicate with overseas clients and understand most of the content I'm reading but fiction books are quite rough.

I searched many times about fluency and what it takes to become really fluent in English. The most common answer was to reach 10 thousand words in vocabulary size, a minimum level to become comfortable with a language. That is the idea behind 10k in the project's name.

In order to reach fluency level, I had started to search for some assistance and was quite disappointed because couldn't find a really convenient way to learn vocabulary. I couldn't get used to services such as quizlet or vanilla flashcards because of either unusable interface or too much hassle to keep going.

I believe the best way to learn English is to immerse yourself into the language. It means avoiding any native translation, only the original definitions of words from the dictionary. That is exactly the reason why the service exists. It's using the Oxford dictionary with a friendly app (web and mobile) to memorise vocabulary by repeating the word on regular basis. Also, the browser extension will assist you at any website with original word definitions from the Oxford dictionary.

I'm really happy if you've read the full message and it'll be delightful to hear your thoughts about the learning process and maybe what works for you to harness the English vocabulary (check the address in a channel description).

P.s. you can use the v10k.co to look up for definitions of the words you can't understand.
