2022-08-24 23:00:39 The connections between Lithuanian — the most conservative Indo-European language — and Rigvedic Sanskrit serve to validate the Aryan Invasion Theory. The ancient Sintashta Culture (2100-1800 BCE) derived much of its genetics and culture from the easternmost reaches of the Corded Ware horizon - which corresponds to the region in which Proto-Baltic, the ancestor language of modern Lithuanian, developed. Archaeological evidence shows that Sintashta was part of the Andronovo Horizon, from which emerged the Sanskrit language and the Vedic hymns.

Some examples of linguistic similarity...

Sanskrit sunus, Lithuanian sunus — Son
Sanskrit avis, Lithuanian avis — Sheep
Sanskrit padas, Lithuanian padas — Sole
Sanskrit viras, Lithuanian vyras — Man
Sanskrit dhumas, Lithuanian dumas — Smoke

2022-08-24 21:45:56 Fun fact: the Baltic Lithuanian language is often claimed to be the most phonologically and lexically similar to Proto-Indo-European.

Baltic – an interesting etymological hypothesis is that "Baltic" is ultimately derived from Proto-Indo-European *bʰel- "White, shining".
Adam of Bremen related it to Latin balteus ("belts"), cognate with North Germanic *baltaz used to refer to the Danish straights.

Slight us not Varuṇa, Aryaman, or Mitra, Ṛbhukṣan, Indra, Āyu, or the Maruts,
When we declare amid the congregation the virtues of the strong Steed, God-descended.
What time they bear before the Courser, covered with trappings and with wealth, the grasped oblation,
The dappled goat goeth straightforward, bleating, to the place dear to Indra and to Pūṣan.
Dear to all Gods, this goat, the share of Pūṣan, is first led forward with the vigorous Courser,
While Tvaṣṭar sends him forward with the Charger, acceptable for sacrifice, to glory.
When thrice the men lead round the Steed, in order, who goeth to the Gods as meet oblation,
The goat precedeth him, the share of Pūṣan, and to the Gods the sacrifice announceth.
Invoker, ministering priest, atoner, fire-kindler Soma-presser, sage, reciter,
With this well ordered sacrifice, well finished, do ye fill full the channels of the rivers.

Sacrifice; from Latin sacraficium via Middle English sacraficen. Ultimately: Latin sacer ("holy") + faciō ("to do, make").

The animal sacrifice was a crucial aspect of Indo-European religious life, which is shown in their daughter cultures of Rome, Greece, the Nordic world and beyond, from the Bronze Age through to the early medieval period.

Sacrifice is recorded in the earliest religious text of the Indo-Europeans:

The goat precedeth him, the share of Pūshan, and to the Gods the sacrifice announceth.
