"Chad" derives from an Old English name,
Ceadda, which is listed in popular name origin sources as meaning "warrior". It is believed to come, ultimately, from Proto-Celtic *katus ("battle"); compare Welsh
cad ("battle, army"), or Breton
kad.
Quite how /k/ became /ch/ is, however, unclear.

Kurunta was a vassal-king and cousin of Tudhaliya IV, King of the Hittite Empire. The treaty, in the Hittite language, depicted above, promises the vassal kingdom of Tarhuntassa to Kurunta and his sons, along with another minor territory. It also defines Tudhaliya IV's predominance within the overall Hittite Empire. The text was excavated in Hattusa in 1986 and is the only bronze tablet found in Anatolia to date. Hattusa was the capital of the Hittite Empire, and the excavation was made within the modern area of Çorum-Boğazköy, northern Turkey, between Ankara and the Black Sea coast.
