Aviation Light Signals are used in case of a Radio failure, an aircraft is not equipped with a radio, or if a pilot is deaf.
ICAO regulations require air traffic control towers to possess "signal light gun" (or "light gun" by the FAA). Guns have a focused bright beam and are capable of emitting three different colours: red, white and green. These colors may be flashed or steady, and have different meanings to aircraft in flight or on the ground.
The meanings of the signals are printed on the side of the light gun for reference.
