French President Emmanuel Macron faces an uphill battle to cling onto control of his government after a damaging national Assembly vote saw his Ensemble grouping gain only 245 of 577 seats.

Beijing has ramped its Russian energy imports to new highs in May, splashing $10.27bn in total (up 80% from last May) as domestic demand creeps up amidst a cautious loosening of restrictions.

Crude purchases alone accounted for $7.47bn, up $1bn from April, marking a 55% rise from a year ago and making Russia China’s no.1 source of oil ahead of Saudi Arabia.

NATO member state Lithuania is now effectively engaged in “direct aggression” against Russia, senator Andrey Klimov argued in his Telegram post Monday, citing Vilnius’ decision to stop the transit of sanctioned goods to Russia’s exclave of Kaliningrad.

Later, the Russian govt issued a demand to Lithuania to lift the “provocative” transit ban, otherwise Moscow will “defend its national interests.”

Items being blocked from transit include coal, metals, construction materials and advanced technology. The region’s governor said the ban means that as much as 50% of all the goods destined for the Kaliningrad Region would be affected. Open / Comment

Suspected Ukrainian attacks targeted drilling rigs off the coast of Crimea on Monday morning, the head of the Russian region, Sergey Aksyonov, said in a statement.

Aksyonov did not disclose the exact locations of the facilities, but said they were owned by Chernomorneftegaz, a company that develops offshore gas and oil fields - its ownership has been disputed by Ukrainian energy giant Naftogaz since 2014, when it was nationalized after Crimea voted to re-join Russia.

Canadian screenwriter and director Paul Haggis has been arrested in the southern Italian town of Ostuni and charged with sexual assault and causing aggravated injury to an unidentified woman. Haggis, whose work on ‘Crash’ and ‘Million Dollar Baby’ earned him two academy awards, has already been accused of rape and sexual misconduct by multiple women.

According to Italian press reports cited by Variety, Haggis was arrested on Sunday while in Ostini for an upcoming film festival. Italian journalist Silvia Bizio, who is organizing the festival, confirmed to Variety that the Canadian director had been arrested, and that the festival would be “completely taking its distance” from him.

The alleged victim was described by prosecutors in the nearby city of Brindisi as “foreign,” or non-Italian. According to a police report cited by Variety, Haggis raped the woman before driving her to Papola Casale airport and leaving her there in “precarious physical and psychological conditions.” Open / Comment
