Israel , Masada Fortress
Not far from the Israeli city of Arad, the fortress of Masada rises on a trapezoidal plateau of one of the rocks of the Judean Desert.
It owes its appearance to King Herod I the Great, who in the 25th year BC built a shelter on the rock for his family. However, it was not built from scratch — as a basis, the king used the remains of the fortress of the Hasmonean period (dated 37-31 BC).
Weapons, food, and gold were also stored in the fortress. There was even an artificial water supply, there were baths. Some of the buildings have survived to the present day. So, in the fortress you can see Herod's palace, a synagogue, baths, water tanks cut into the rocks, a pool for ritual ablution, and much more.
Once at the foot of a steep 450 m cliff, on which the fortress is actually located, some tourists prefer to climb up on foot along a narrow path, which is called the snake.
