2022-05-12 09:49:34 Cryptocurrencies Drop Anew as TerraUSD’s Woes Cloud the Outlook.

Cryptocurrencies resumed declines as the collapse of the TerraUSD stablecoin triggers a flight from many popular digital tokens. 

Bitcoin shed as much as 6.1% on Thursday, falling below $27,000 to the lowest since 2020. Ether slid up to 12%, while tokens like Avalanche and Solana that underpin some key decentralized finance protocols also retreated. 

Virtual coins had earlier posted double-digit intraday percentage gains but the rally fizzled. The TerraUSD stablecoin was still below it $1 intended peg, while the affiliated token Luna tumbled. 

The crypto sector overall is nursing heavy losses for the week and sentiment remains fragile. The various stablecoins taken together are worth well over $100 billion, and a widening loss of confidence could be an existential test for the digital-asset ecosystem.

The TerraUSD algorithmic stablecoin has been bouncing between 30 cents and 90 cents and was around 66 cents as of 6:18 am in London.

│ TerraUSD aimed to offer a 1-to-1 peg with the U.S. dollar
│ Token backed by Do Kwon hit low of 60 cents in broad selloff

Rather than trading at $1, as designed, the TerraUSD coin, or UST, slipped over the weekend to around 99 cents. By Monday evening in New York, it had plunged to 60 cents, obliterating its previous low of 92 cents in May 2021. It clawed back losses on Tuesday and is fluctuating between around 90 cents and $1 -- a sign of trouble.

What caused Terra’s coin to become untethered is a topic of intense internet debate. The disconnect happened alongside a sharp selloff in cryptoassets -- including a plunge in Bitcoin to below $30,000 -- and a broader retreat from risk assets including stocks. Whatever the catalyst, it’s no small thing: There are around 18.5 billion of UST in circulation, according to CoinMarketCap, a big enough presence that its swings could have systemic implications for other coins and protocols.
