Consumer cyclical stocks struggled in the first quarter, lagging the broader market by 6 full percentage points. As such, the median consumer stock trades at a discount to our fair value estimate, with more than half of the names we cover trading in 4- and 5-star range, points out director Erin Lash. Travel and leisure stocks remain among the most significantly undervalued. While a volatile global political environment and rising prices may disrupt the travel industry’s recovery short-term, we forecast a full recovery in the travel industry to prepandemic levels by 2023, she notes.

The pandemic’s impact on retailers may be longer-lived. “We believe retailers will need to continue to optimize e-commerce platforms to avoid losing sales in a quickly shifting marketplace and remain engaged with consumer trends,” concludes Lash.

2022-04-11 11:30:53 Warren Buffett Loves Cheap Stocks. The HP Purchase Is Proof.

Warren Buffett is at heart a value investor. Berkshire Hathaway ’s recent investment activity, including the purchase of more than $4 billion in HP stock, illustrates that.

HP (ticker: #HPQ) is a fair business trading at a cheap price. Berkshire Hathaway (BRK. A, BRK. B) paid about nine times earnings projected 2022 earnings per share for its 11% stake in the maker of personal computers, printers, and printing supplies.

News of Berkshire’s purchase, revealed late Wednesday, boosted HP’s stock by 15% Thursday to $40.08. HP shares fell 3.6% to $38.63 on Friday, while Berkshire’s Class A stock was 1.8% lower at $529,000.

Global equities ended the week on a negative note, as selling in the closing minutes of trading on Friday – led by technology stocks – weighed on US equities. The US S&P 500 Index subsequently closed with a loss of 0.3% and the Nasdaq 100 was down 1.4%. Across the Atlantic, European equities rallied 1.5%.

Tightening monetary conditions continued to weigh on risk sentiment, as concerns about balance-sheet tapering and aggressive interest rate hikes drove the yield on the 10-year Treasury bond 32 bp higher to 2.70% last week. Although borrowing costs are likely to rise further, we believe equities still offer value, given the healthy growth environment, rising earnings and low investor positioning.
