Sergei Lavrov has made his first stop in Bahrain, as he prepares to meet with top diplomats from Gulf Cooperation Council countries. They hope to agree on oil production quotas before an OPEC+ gathering in Vienna.

In Bahrain, Lavrov called out NATO acting as world police, said Ukraine must demine waters before grain can be shipped out and said Russia will provide free movement to the Mediterranean - despite Western blockades on Russian ships which worsen the current food crisis.

Lavrov will also meet with ministers from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Kuwait, and Qatar, reports Reuters, citing anonymous sources.

A sixth package of sanctions from Brussels will give exceptions to states like Hungary - but around 75% of the bloc will be hit with a ban on Russian crude.

The embargo comes after weeks of deliberation, with EU Council President Charles Michel confirming a watered-down embargo which will grow to 90% by the end of 2022.

Hungary, which had previously blocked the sanctions, was exempted from the trade restrictions, its Prime Minister Viktor Orban said. “Hungarian families can sleep well,” he wrote on social media.

The latest package of measures also excludes Sber, Russia’s largest bank, from the SWIFT financial messaging system. It also bans three more Russian broadcasters from the EU, and imposes further individual sanctions on Russian citizens, according to media reports.

Vladimir Putin and Nerandra Modi will be hosted by Xi Jinping at the online BRICS Summit in June as the leaders of Russia, India and China meet for the first time since the Ukraine conflict began.

Earlier this month Xi had addressed opposing geopolitical hegemony with BRICS foreign ministers and is expected to focus on his Global Security Initiative announced in April and address the border dispute near India’s Ladakh region.

The summit will take place on June 24 - just two days before the 3-day G7 meeting begins in Germany.

NBA superstar Kyrie Irving is among several basketball players to have called for the release of Brittney Griner from a Russian prison on her 100th day of detention after she was arrested for possession of drugs at an airport close to Moscow.
