We value things that were made by us disproportionately
We value things more if we were involved in their creation and people also see their creations- even if they are very amateurish- as similar in value to experts’ creations. Researchers calls this
phenomenon the IKEA effect.

Fear can feel good—if we're not really in danger.
Not everyone loves scary movies, but for the people who do, there are a few theories as to why—the main one coming down to hormones.
When you're watching a scary movie or walking through a haunted house, you get all the adrenaline, endorphins, and dopamine from a fight-or-flight response, but no matter how scared you feel, your brain recognizes that you're not really in danger—so you get that natural high without the risk.

We (unintentionally) believe what we want to believe
Humans are victim to something called
confirmation bias: the tendency to interpret facts in a way that confirms what we already believe.
So no matter how many facts you throw at your uncle trying to sway his political opinions, there's a good chance he isn't going to budge. It's one of the psychology facts you'll just have to accept that you can't change.

Joy and vulnerability
To feel great joy we have to be ready to feel vulnerable. I found this counterintuitive.
I found this counterintuitive. As Brené Brown shares, if we can't tolerate joy,
if we're not open to being vulnerable, we can find ourselves dress-rehearsing tragedy — when things are at their best we might be telling ourselves that it won't last, we don't deserve it, something will go wrong.
An antidote to this she says is to practise gratitude.
Be thankful and appreciative of what we have.

Be proactive
You have a natural need to wield influence on the world around you so don’t spend your time just reacting to external events and circumstances.
Take charge and assume responsibility for your life.

Our favorite subject is ourselves
Don't blame your self-absorbed brother
for talking about himself—
it's just the way his brain is wired
