What does it mean to speak truth to power?

Stand up for what is right

To speak truth to power is when one or more people stand up for what is right by resisting an oppressive force, such as a person or company. It has become a rallying cry for people resisting or uncovering corrupt, unfair, and incorrect practices performed by people in positions of power, especially the government.

While some date the phrase back to Ancient Greece, its modern-day roots go back to the early 1940s, when it was popularized by American civil rights activist Bayard Rustin. He advocated for nonviolent methods for battling greater powers to achieve social justice.

"Speak truth to power" has been adopted by various nonviolent resistance groups over the years, including against the Soviet Union during the Cold War and against the Taliban in the Middle East. It gained more exposure in the late-2010s, especially on social media, as a way to encourage dissidents to rebel.

You will probably see it in protests for racial justice, gender equality, LGBTQ rights, censorship, and other issues defying government laws or the "status quo." The phrase is prevalent on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and Snapchat among social activists.

Example

"Don't give up. Speak truth to power whenever you can and we will eventually achieve equality."

2021-10-15 05:30:03 TNG

What does TNG stand for?

The Next Generation

Trekkies and other nerds use TNG to refer to "Star Trek: The Next Generation." Airing from 1987 to 1994, TNG spearheaded a Star Trek revival that has yet to completely fade away.

Expanding upon the original Star Trek series (known as TOS), TNG told the story of Captain Picard and the crew of a new starship Enterprise. Their continuing mission was to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, and to boldly go where no one had gone before. Picard and crew pursued their mission of exploration throughout seven seasons and several related spin-offs, before passing the torch to the next next generation.

Example

"I'm a big TNG fan, but my sister's more into DS9."

What is the friend zone?

A relationship where a person's love interest thinks of him as just a friend
Friend zone is the area of a relationship where one person is romantically interested in another person but he or she thinks of the other as just a friend. The relationship typically consists of a male who is pursuing a female that appreciates the attention but is only interested in being a friend.

Unfortunately for a lot of guys, the friend zone is where a lot of romantic pursuits die. The area is a common problem for many "nice" guys and girls that are so nice they are thought of friends by their baes instead of love interests. Even though it is tough to get out of the friend zone, it is not impossible, unlike the brotherzone.

Example
"She just gave him a high five when he went in for a kiss.
He's definitely in the friend zone. "

What does auction draft mean?

Draft where owners bid on players
An auction draft is a fantasy sports term for a draft where owners bid on players to build their team. In this type of draft the team with the last pick in the first round has the first pick in the second round and so on.

The auction draft is one of two main draft that fantasy owners choose from to build their teams. The other is the "snake draft" or "serpentine draft," where the team with the last pick in the first round has the first pick in the second round and so on. In an auction draft, each team has an alotted amount of money, usually $100 or $200, to bid on players to fill their roster. This type of draft is especially popular in a "keeper league" because it allows the owner to choose his players rather than leaving it up to the luck of draft position.

Example
"I don't like to spend too much on any one player in auction drafts, instead I like to clean up on talent after everyone else spends their money."

What does BIL stand for?

Boss is listening
BIL is an acronym used to notify the recipient that his or her boss is listening or watching the chat session. It is similar to the PAW and POMS acronyms.

Since the work environment is not the most appropriate place to talk about personal or offensive employees have to be covert about their conversation content. The acronym allows the sender to discreetly tell the recipient to be careful what he types in a way that the boss wouldn't notice.

Example
