"The media literally delivers scare stories related to COVID-19 every minute, and reading such news can lead to the 'nocebo effect' - people endure the disease more severely because that's what they expect, as opposed to the well-known 'placebo effect,' where people get better, again because it fits their expectations.
There is no reliable information about the prevalence of the "nocebo effect" during the current pandemic. But Jeremy Howick, an expert on the "placebo effect" from Oxford University, and Giulio Ongaro, a medical anthropologist from the London School of Economics, authors of an article in The Conversation, are sure that such psychological effects of mass suggestion are now very common.
A vivid example of the "nocebo effect" is the analysis of the causes of death of more than 28,000 Californians of Chinese descent statistically showed that people whom Chinese astrology based on the year of their birth is considered particularly susceptible to certain diseases die significantly earlier than people with the same diseases but who were born in other years. Scientists have concluded that there is an influence of "psycho-cultural factors" (i.e. belief in Chinese astrology) on mortality.
