Today we remember Saint Columba, the Apostle to the Picts.

He was one of the first to bring Christianity to the Gaels and Picts of what is now Scotland, and also one of the Apostles of Ireland.

Saint Columba, pray for us!

This channel will be a space for the discussion of primarily Scottish Clans, their origins and histories to the greatest extent, as well as elements of Scottish culture, tradition, and history which intertwine with the Clan dialogues. Expect an extensive analysis of Scottish and at times Irish Clans far and wide, from the greatest of clans, to obscure and unusual surnames and Clans that are otherwise uncommon. By extension, we’ll explore clan rivalries, intra-clan disputes, and clan involvement and alignment in decisive historic battles. Most of all, a cultural community and space for the discussion of clans, surnames, and family origins throughout Scotland, but also the British Isles in general is the ultimate objective.

These are images of Irish and Scottish folk carrying turf creels. A creel is a wickerwork basket or trap for catching lobsters, or hauling fish or peat blocks. In the Highlands and Islands creels enabled people and ponies to carry peat, seaweed, potatoes and other produce across rough ground that wheeled carts were not able to access. Usually made of willow, but sometimes with heather, they were made upside down by sticking stakes into the ground, or into a template (known as a caep in gaelic), and weaving around them. The upright stakes were then bent over to complete the base. The woman in the first image is from Donegal in 1936.
